See all the amazing work our vet and vet nurses across Australia have done to improve the quality of life for our canine friends.
Dr Kylie Flannagan has been a vet for the last 10 years, fulfilling the career she has dreamed about since she was young on her parent’s farm. Her work has been filled with rewarding experiences, including helping patients suffering with dermatological conditions. Kylie says that “Scratching is a part of life, but when it is excessive, it can be both distressing to the dog and the owner”. Kylie recommends seeing your local vet if your dog is suffering with itchy skin, as there are many treatment options available to cater for your dog’s specific needs. Through her experience, Kylie has seen many cases with red raw and infected skin, and being able to see these signs decrease and then go away, much like with her patient Pumpkin, is what makes her job so rewarding. Kylie has loved watching Pumpkin “get her smile back” and return to being her relaxed self. Kylie says that Pumpkin really has been a different dog since treatment and finds great satisfaction in seeing her owner happy with Pumpkin’s results and seeing their bond stronger than ever. Thank you Dr Kylie for your efforts with Pumpkin and so many other patients over the years! Dr Kylie was nominated as Vet of the Year 2023 by her patient Pumpkin, whose owner has won $1000 and a personalised July luggage.

MM-xxxxxGrowing up on a farm, Dr Kylie has always been surrounded by animals, and she wouldn’t have it any other way! She was “always enthralled when the vet would come out” and treat animals on the farm, and loved the idea of guiding pets owners to keep pets healthy. She has been a vet for 10 years, and has loved working with her dermatology patients, watching their distress be alleviated and watch them “get their twinkle back or a smile in Pumpkin’s case!”. Dr Kylie understands how stressful a scratchy dog can be (for pup and owner), and recommend seeing a vet for any itchy concerns which can “result in happier bonds between pets and owners”.

MM-xxxxxDr Ann has had her dream job as a veterinarian for 35 years, following in the footsteps of her father who was also a Vet. She enjoys working with Dermatology cases because "you can see the pet get so much relief when their skin condition improves, and they can enjoy their normal life without scratching or chewing at their skin and ears." Dr Ann’s advice to pet owners who suspect they have a dog with a skin condition, is to "go and get it checked out by your vet early! It will provide them with relief, and will ultimately save you money because as time goes on more self-trauma occurs and more treatments are needed to get the condition under control.”

MM-25688Dr Karen Phillips from Coral Coast Veterinary Services is our May ‘Vet of the Month’. Dr Karen has worked as a vet for 27 years. Karen became a vet from her love of animals from a young age and caring for them when they were ill or injured as a farm girl. Dr Karen notes how challenging and frustrating dermatology cases can be, with the effects of skin disease often impacting on the quality of the animals life. Her advice for itchy dog pet owners is to seek help from your vet as soon as possible. “There are many online products which are simply not helpful and can prevent early diagnosis and treatment. I would definitely suggest that it is best to only take advice from professionals to try to avoid the confusing array of 'old wives tales.' ”

MM-29569APumpkin is a huge part of my life after the recent shock loss of my husband. My life was just not the same, but since welcoming Pumpkin to my home, she brought a joyful and happy energy back to my life. However, seeing her driven mad by her sensitive skin and constant itching was too much to bare and she didn't have her happy smile on. So I went and saw Dr Kylie at Bannockburn Veterinary Clinic and through her careful examination and running some tests, we discovered she had allergies. We followed Dr Kylie's recommendations for an itch injection while we ran food and exposure trials and we can now say she is totally relieved from her itch! She absolutely has her happy face back, which makes my household happy again!! We thank Dr Kylie for her dedication to making Pumpkin smile again.

MM‐29569PWhen Nyx, my tiny chihuahua, couldn't stop scratching, we knew it was time to paws everything and seek professional advice. Her itchiness was driving her more nuts than a bird teasing her through the window. Our vet, the ultimate canine itchologist, didn't waste any time. We didn't want Nyx to bark up the wrong tree with DIY remedies, so our vet sniffed out the issue. They prescribed some tail‐wagging treatments that were far from ruff on her little body. Now, Nyx is pawsitively overjoyed, living a life free from the relentless itch. She's traded her scratching loops for joyful zoomies around the house. Thanks to our vet, Nyx is fur‐tunately too happy to even remember those dogged days of discomfort. So here's a big round of appaws for our amazing vet!

MM‐28291DPoppy was adopted as an allergy prone dog. In October last year her chronic skin allergies became a real challenge. Being itchy, hot and losing fur was not fun. Poppy is also not a fan of being examined. Luckily Dr Thi was up for the challenge! Poppy was treated with injections, baths, fish oil, low allergy food and different medications. The extra time and effort Dr Thi put into researching and consulting to determine the best care and treatment for Poppy was simply amazing. Dr Thi even got very clever at examining and getting skin samples etc from Poppy without her even realising what was going on. The months of effort were worth it. Thanks to Dr Thi and the staff at Morley Vetcentre, Poppy is a different dog. No more itching! She is happier, sleeps better and even has a fluffier tail. Thank you Dr Thi.

MM‐28291LMy experience with Dr Allison was a lifesaver for my dog. He was consistently itchy and scratching himself even after baths. I called my veterinarian's office and after listening to my concerns, the nurse made an appointment to examine my dog. They administered an allergy test and diagnosed my dog with an allergic reaction to grass. This diagnosis was a relief as it meant we could now determine the cause of his discomfort. I was provided presciptions for the itch, and guidance on how to minimize or eliminate his exposure to the allergen. Her knowledge was extensive, and we could not have been happier with the service provided. They were very compassionate and professional. Her work ethic was impressive, and we could see that she cared about our dog's health and wellbeing.

MM‐27777DDr. Kay employed a multi‐faceted approach to help alleviate Sasha's scratching. Firstly , she conducted a thorough examination to identify any underlying causes, such as allergies, parasites, or skin infections. Based on her findings, Dr. Kay developed a treatment plan for Sasha. Including prescribing medication to alleviate itching and combat any infections present. To address potential allergens, Dr. Kay recommended dietary changes and suggested environmental modifications, such as hypoallergenic bedding and avoiding certain household products. She also advised regular grooming and bathing with specialised, soothing shampoos. In addition to these measures, Dr. Kay emphasised the importance of flea and tick prevention, as well as routine veterinary check‐ups to monitor Sasha's progress. She educated me about managing Sasha's scratching behavior, suggesting distraction techniques and discouraging excessive licking or chewing. Dr. Kay's holistic approach, combining medical intervention, lifestyle adjustments, and ongoing support, aimed to provide Sasha with relief from scratching and improve his overall well‐being.

MM-26600AUnfortunately my dog Cash suffers from "typical staffy skin". He has had ongoing skin troubles since a pup. He is now nine years old and his skin has never looked better! I called into my local vet clinic and spoke with Nurse Kylie on reception. I was looking for some advice, I'd tried difference medications from other vets, shampoos and special diets. No luck. When talking with Nurse Kylie she told me about some solutions that work well for itchy dogs. It sounded too good to be true. She helped me make an appointment for the following day to see Vet Tamara. Cash received a new treatment and it worked wonders! We now visit Grafton Vet Clinic roughly every month for his injection and thankfully he doesn't mind the little prick of the needle with a big mouth full of liver treats!

Because of this, she needs weekly baths, wipe downs after she’s been outside and many ear flushes as she is very prone to ear infections. Every month, she gets an injection (for her itch)which helps her condition greatly. She doesn’t always like visiting the vet as she knows she goes in for needles, but I know she enjoys feeling less itchy and having less symptoms associated with her allergies. All of the vets and nurses at Chapman Animal Hospital know Kira, they are always so lovely, very knowledgeable and thorough. They are always reassuring and never make us feel bad for seeing Kira so often."
